HL Deb 20 February 1924 vol 56 cc207-8
THE LORD PRESIDENT OF THE COUNCIL (LORD PAKMOOR)

My Lords, I beg leave to present a Bill to carry into effect the Treaty of Peace between His Majesty and certain other Powers and certain Conventions, protocols, and declarations connected therewith, and to move that it be read a first time. I should like to ask the noble Marquess opposite what would be a convenient day to take the Second Reading. Our only desire is to fix a day that would be convenient to him.

Moved, That the Bill be now read 1a.— (Lord Parmoor.)

THE MARQUESS CURZON OF KEDLESTON

My Lords, I gather from what the noble and learned Lord has said, although I did not get it directly from the title, that this is a Bill to give effect to the Treaty with Turkey—what is commonly called the Lausanne Treaty, and from every point of view I concur with the noble and learned Lord in thinking it is very desirable that we should take the Bill at as early a date as possible. I have been looking at our Papers to see what amount of business we have before us, and the next few days are rather congested. So far as I can see, the first day upon which we could take the Bill so that it would be the first Order of the Day would be Thursday of next week and, subject to the noble Lord's approval, I should feel disposed to ask him to put it down for Second Reading on that day.

LORD PARMOOR

I entirely concur in what the noble Marquess has said, and we will put the Bill down for Second Reading on the day which he has mentioned.

On Question, Bill read 1a; and to be printed.
