HL Deb 12 July 1923 vol 54 cc1025-6
THE EARL OF CLARENDON

My Lords, I beg to move that the House do now adjourn till to-morrow at five o'clock. I would also like to take the opportunity of informing noble Lords that the House will meet on Monday next at a quarter past four o'clock.

EARL BEAUCHAMP

My Lords, I do not rise to offer any objection, but I think it would be as well that the noble Earl should explain the reasons why we are to meet to-morrow.

THE EARL OF CLARENDON

I beg the noble Earl's pardon. The object is in order to receive the Rent Restriction Bill which, I understand, will pass through its final stage in the House of Commons to-morrow. It will be a formal sitting, the object being to save time and to get the Bill through before the end of the Session. The Bill must become law by midnight of the 31st inst.. because the Provisional Bill expires at that date.

EARL BEAUCHAMP

I do not offer any opposition, but I thought it might be for the convenience of noble Lords here, and for those who read the OFFICIAL REPORT, to know the further course of procedure with regard to this Bill. I under stand the noble Earl wishes to take the Second Reading on Tuesday. I offer no objection, but I thought it as well to get it on record.

If there is any difficulty, may I make a suggestion? If it will be of any assistance to the noble Earl I will raise no objection to the Bill being read a first time on Monday, and in that case I am sure he, will meet me by having copies printed and circulated before Monday, so that we can take the Second Reading on Tuesday.

THE EARL OF CLARENDON

I am much obliged to the noble Earl. That will solve the difficulty, and I will see that the Bill is printed and circulated before Monday. I ask leave to withdraw the Motion to meet to-morrow.

Motion, by leave, withdrawn.

House adjourned at ten minutes before six o'clock until Monday next at a quarter past four o'clock.
