HL Deb 30 November 1922 vol 52 cc107-8

Read 3a (according to Order).

Clause 7:

Purchase of tramways by local authorities.

7. The provisions of section 43 of the Tramways Act 1870 shall apply to the Trustees' tramways Provided that in the application of those provisions the period of forty-two years shall be substituted for the period of twenty-one years therein mentioned.

THE SECRETARY FOR SCOTLAND (VISCOUNT NOVAR)

My Lords, I beg to move the deletion of Clause 7. This Order authorised the Glasgow Corporation to acquire and work certain tramways outside its district. In accordance with general Orders Clause 7 had been inserted, providing that the local authority of the district in which the tramways are situate shall have power to purchase the tramways after 42 years. The promoters, however, represented to me that this clause should be deleted when the Order was before Parliament for confirmation, to enable the Corporation to own and to work the tramways in perpetuity. I beg, therefore, to move the omission of the clause.

Amendment moved— Leave out Clause 7.—(Viscount Novar.)

On Question, Amendment agreed to.

Bill passed, and sent to the Commons.
