HL Deb 31 March 1922 vol 49 c1057

Page 1, line 9, at end insert: ("Provided further that it is hereby declared that the British Government does not seek under Article 10 or any other article of the said Agreement, In evade its just responsibilities to, and engagements with, public servants of His Majesty in Southern Ireland, and undertakes to continue responsible for payment of compensation or pension, as the case may be, to judges, officials, members of police forces, and other public servants on terms not less favourable than those provided for such public servants under the Government of Ireland Act, 1920.")

VISCOUNT PEEL

My Lords, I move that your Lordships do not insist upon the third Amendment. The Reason given by the Commons is that the Amendment is privileged. In reply to Lord Killanin I do not think I can put in more emphatic language that which I stated on a previous stage of the Bill, and which has been several times stated in another place—namely, that although the Government do not desire to make it a statutory obligation, yet, for the reasons which I then explained, the Government do definitely guarantee the payment of this compensation, provided it is not undertaken by the Irish Executive. which they hope will be the case and have no reason for thinking will not be the case.

Moved, That this House doth not insist on the said Amendment.— (Viscount Peel.)

On Question, Motion agreed to.
