HL Deb 22 June 1922 vol 50 cc1058-9
LORD CARSON

My Lords, I beg to ask a Question of which I have given private notice—Whether it is true that Field-Marshal Sir Henry Wilson has been shot at in Eaton Place to-day and dangerously wounded; whether the Government can give us any further information as to the circumstances under which this took place; and whether any arrests have been made?

THE LORD CHANCELLOR (VISCOUNT BIRKENHEAD)

My Lords, the shortness of time which has elapsed since the terrible event took place to which the Question of the noble and learned Lord refers has made it difficult to obtain that full and detailed information which the House would naturally expect and require. I fear there is no doubt that as a result of this criminal and murderous assault the Field-Marshal has succumbed. The noble and learned Lord has asked further whether any arrests have taken place. I am informed that two men have so far been arrested, and I understand they were arrested in circumstances which renders their act of complicity in the matter certain. I ask leave not to say more at this moment.
