HL Deb 29 June 1920 vol 40 c972

Order of the Day for the Second Reading read.

THE EARL OF ONSLOW

My Lords, this is a Bill to confirm a Provisional Order giving validity to marriages celebrated in the parish church of St. Margaret, Halstead. The original church, built in 1854, was pulled down in 1880–1 and a new church was built. Through omission no order for substitution was made at the time, and the new church never, therefore, became a place where marriages could lawfully be celebrated. This omission was only recently discovered, when to remedy it an order of substitution was made on November 13, 1919. At the request of the various parties interested the Home Secretary made the Provisional Order referred to in order to remove the doubt as to the validity of the marriages solemnised between 1881 and November, 1919. No objections have been received, and the Order is in the usual form and similar to numerous others made in previous years.

Moved, That the Bill be now read 2a.(The Earl of Onslow.)

On Question, Bill read 2a.
