HL Deb 26 June 1919 vol 34 c1072
VISCOUNT HALDANE

My Lords, I do not know who represents the Government on this occasion, but the Forestry Bill has been announced for Tuesday next. I believe that it is not intended to take the effective Second Reading Motion until Thursday, but it is a Bill the financial clauses of which involve highly controversial subjects, and the Bill has not been printed, nor is it certain when it will be in your Lordships' hands. If the Bill is taken on Thursday there will be inadequate time to discuss the very large questions which I think the financial clauses are likely to raise; therefore I hope that the Government will not take the Bill next week.

THE LORD CHANCELLOR (LORD BIRKENHEAD)

My Lords, I am very sorry that the noble and learned Viscount did not inform my noble friend who is in charge of the Bill that he intended to raise this point; because, of course, my noble friend would then have been here to deal with it. But the noble and learned Viscount has certainly advanced a consideration which obviously must be very respectfully examined, and I will see without any delay that his representations are conveyed to my noble friend.
