HL Deb 18 December 1919 vol 38 cc444-5
LORD PHILLIMORE

My Lords, I rise to ask His Majesty's Government whether steps will be taken to facilitate the departure from Esthonia of the officers and men in the late army of General Judenitch, or at any rate of those who went forth from this country, and whether His Majesty's Government recognise the duty of providing for the return of those officers and men, whether British or Russian, who have preceeded from these shores to join that army, and whether in the event of its not being possible to bring them away, His Majesty's Government will use its good offices with the Government of Esthonia to procure for them humane and decent treatment.

LORD STANMORE

My Lords, the Allied Military Mission under General Niessel are endeavouring to arrange with the Esthonian Government for the future disposition of General Yudenitch's army. As regards the position of British subjects who have been connected with that force, the War Office have informed us that all British military personnel, which had been sent with Tanks, have now been withdrawn, and we are not aware of any other British subjects serving as volunteers in the ranks of the North-West Russian Army. The evacuation of the Russian officers who proceeded from this country is a matter not for His Majesty's Government alone but for the Allied Mission, who may be trusted to use their best efforts to secure for them humane and equitable treatment.
