HL Deb 05 March 1918 vol 29 cc222-3
THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY

My Lords, I ask your Lordships' leave, before public business is proceeded with, to refer, as some interest has been taken in it, to a Motion standing in my name in respect of Ireland, which was originally fixed to be taken on Thursday next— To move to resolve, That as the present situation in Ireland has become a danger to the Empire and a menace to the successful prosecution of the war and to the security of life and property, it is incumbent on His Majesty's Government to enforce the law in that country. I have ventured to postpone this Motion until Tuesday next, at the request of the Leader of the House. He signified to me that it would be more convenient for the Government if it was taken on Tuesday, and as there will probably be on that day, more time for your Lordships to consider the matter thoroughly, I have, I need not say, complied with his request. Therefore the Motion stands for Tuesday, March 12, [...] of for next Thursday.

THE LORD PRIVY SEAL (THE EARL OF CRAWFORD)

I am much obliged to the noble Marquess.
