HL Deb 19 December 1917 vol 27 cc265-6

Order of the Day for the House to be put into Committee, read.

Moved, That the House do now resolve itself into Committee.—(Earl Curzon of Kedleston.)

On Question, Motion agreed to.

House in Committee accordingly.

[The EARL OF KINTORE in the Chair.]

Clause 1:

Confirmation of deed of settlement.

1. The said deed of settlement is hereby confirmed, and shall have effect as it enacted in this Act.

THE LORD PRESIDENT OF THE COUNCIL (EARL CURZON OF KEDLESTON)

My Lords, I said yesterday that I should ask your Lordships to consider and pass an Amendment to this clause of the Bill to which your Lordships then gave a Second Reading. The Amendment that I propose is in Clause 1, to insert at the end these words: "But nothing in this Act shall prejudice or affect the right, title, or interest, if any, of any person in or to the Chequers Estate other than the right, title or interest of the parties to the said deed of the first, second and third parts." The object of this Amendment is to secure that the confirmation of the settlement by the Bill does not prejudice any possible rights of any persons who are not parties to the settlement. Without such a provision it might have been argued that the Bill would override such rights.

Amendment moved— Clause 1, page 1, line 21, at end insert, ("but nothing in this Act shall prejudice or affect the right, title, or interest, if any, of any person in or to the Chequers Estate other than the right, title, or interest of the parties to the said deed of the first, second and third parts").—(Earl Curzon of Kedleston.)

On Question, Amendment agreed to.

Clause 1, as amended, agreed to.

Remaining clauses agreed to.

EARL CURZON OF KEDLESTON

I beg leave to move that Standing Order No. XXXIX be suspended in order that this Bill may be passed through its remaining stages to-day.

Moved accordingly, and, on Question, Motion agreed to.

Report of Amendment received: Bill read 3a and passed, and returned to the Commons.
