HL Deb 27 July 1916 vol 22 c998
LORD HARRIS

My Lords, I had hoped to have had the opportunity of asking a question on the subject of wool. I sent a letter this morning to the noble Marquess the Leader of the House saying that I trusted, if it was not inconvenient, I might be given the opportunity, although I had put no Notice on the Paper, of asking a question. But I understand that he has not yet received the letter. It is very unfortunate. I do not know what Department is dealing with this subject, whether it is the War Office, the Board of Agriculture, or the Treasury The last intimation that we had some weeks ago was in the public Press, to the effect that a deputation representative of agricultural interests had been received at the Treasury. Not knowing which Department was concerned I wrote to my noble friend Lord Crewe, but as he has not received the letter I must postpone my question. I am sorry for that, because this matter is getting very urgent. The position is that Colonial owners of wool are permitted to sell their wool but British owners are not, and a great deal of inconvenience is being caused. But I will put the question down for next week.

House adjourned at twenty minutes past Six o'clock, till to-morrow, Eleven o'clock.
