§ EARL ST. ALDWYNMy Lords, I wish to ask the noble Marquess the Leader of the House what proposal he has to make to your Lordships with regard to the adjournment of the House and its subsequent meeting.
THE LORD PRESIDENT OF THE COUNCIL (THE MARQUESS OF CREWE)My Lords, I understand that the Prime Minister announced in another place that the adjournment of that House would take place, if possible, on Wednesday, and that the recess would continue until Tuesday, September 14. We propose that the same course should be followed in this House. There are reasons, upon which I need not dilate, which make it undesirable for either House to sit separately from the other, although circumstances are always, of course, liable to arise in which one House may be sitting when the other is not. In the particular circumstances and in the absence of any reason so far as we know to the contrary, we propose to pursue the course which has been indicated in another place.
LORD BALFOUR OF BURLEIGHWill there not be difficulties about adjourning to-morrow inasmuch as one rather important Bill has not yet come up to your Lordships' House?
LORD BALFOUR OF BURLEIGHThe actual decision of the other House as to the adjournment has not yet been taken. May we assume, after what the Leader of the House has said as to both Houses having the same recess, that if any change is made by the other House in the duration of the vacation there will be a corresponding change affecting your Lordships' House?
THE MARQUESS OF CREWEI quite agree that if a change is made in the date affecting the other House we should be not merely entitled but compelled to reconsider the question.
