HL Deb 27 August 1914 vol 17 c509
THE LORD PRIVY SEAL AND SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIA (THE MARQUESS OF CREWE)

My Lords, before I move the Motion that stands in my name I desire to repeat a quite short statement which was made by the Prime Minister in another place earlier in the afternoon. He stated that— Sir John French reports that he was engaged yesterday against a superior force. He says that his troops fought splendidly. He speaks in high terms of the quality and efficiency of the French Regular troops and their officers, and considers the position and the prospect of the Army in the now impending battle satisfactory.
