HL Deb 12 May 1899 vol 71 c449
THE EARL OF KIMBERLEY

Before the House adjourns, might I ask when it is proposed that the House shall rise for the Whitsuntide recess?

THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY

My intention originally was to take the same day as the House of Commons, but as I am told that it will be impossible to send any Bills down to that House on that day, I have come to the conclusion that it is an unnecessary act of self-denial, and I think, therefore, we shall rise on the Thursday.

THE EARL OF KIMBERLEY

Until when?

THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY

I hope I shall not be considered indecorous if I give as the date the day after Derby Day.

THE EARL OF KIMBERLEY

The other House usually adjourns to the Derby Day.

THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY

But even the sacredness of that day would not permit us to sit upon a Wednesday, which is a thing we never do.

House adjourned at half-past Five of the clock, to Monday next, a quarter past Four of the clock.
