HL Deb 03 August 1899 vol 75 cc1242-3

Order of the Day for the Second Reading read.

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR WAR (the Marquess of LANDSDOWNE)

My Lords, the object of this Bill is to amend the Patriotic Fund Act, 1881, which limits the application of the funds dealt with under it to the widows and children of officers and men. There is a surplus, and we take power under this Bill to apply that surplus to the relief of relatives other than widows and children.

Moved, "That the Bill be now read 2a."—(The Marquess of Lansdowne.)

On Question, agreed to.

Bill read 2a accordingly; Committee negatived; and Bill to be read 3a To-morrow.
