HL Deb 04 June 1894 vol 25 c281
THE EARL OF MAYO

asked Her Majesty's Government when the bridge over the tidal portion of the Gweebarra River, County Donegal, would be commenced; and also when the roads leading thereto would be begun? He was afraid this was another "Irish grievance," though of a much smaller character than the previous question raised. It was with regard to the bridge projected by the Congested Districts Board over the tidal portion of this river. The scheme was projected last year, and the roads leading to the bridge were marked out, but nothing had been done since. The people in these districts were extremely poor. Their poverty was much greater than in other parts, even of County Donegal. They had looked forward with great anticipations of these works. Many of them were unable to earn the rents of their cottages without going over to Scotland, and those who stayed at home would be immensely benefited by this work. It would enable the people in the thickly-populated district of the Rosses to reach the town of Glenties without having to go many miles round.

LORD MONKSWELL

said, that the Congested Districts Board of Ireland hoped to be in a position before the end of the month to invite tenders for the construction of this bridge, and the approaches thereto.
