HL Deb 06 February 1894 vol 21 c73
THE EARL OF DERBY

asked the Secretary of State for India whether there was any foundation for the report that the Government contemplated the re-imposition of Import Duties on cotton goods imported into India?

THE LORD PRESIDENT OF THE COUNCIL AND SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIA (The Earl of KIMBERLEY)

My Lords, the question of the noble Lord relates to the intentions of the Government of India, with respect to the Budget for the year that begins about two months from this date. It would be contrary to all practice to announce beforehand what the provisions of the Budget will be. I may say, however, that I have not heard of any intention on the part of the Government of India to impose an Import Duty on cotton goods.
