§ * LORD PLAYFAIRpresented 34 Petitions in favour of the Bill from various towns and villages on the coasts of Scotland. He thought it unnecessary to read the list of names in detail. They were signed by between 4,000 and 5,000 separate signatories and by the Corporations named.
THE DUKE OF ARGYLLsaid, he would be glad if the noble Lord could give the list of names, as he desired to know the character of the places represented—whether they were fishing villages or important towns.
§ LORD PLAYFAIRwas not sufficiently familiar with them to be able to say whether they were Corporations or villages, but he would read out the names—Fishermen, &c. of Macduff, Boddam, Torry, Catterline, Johnshaven, Pennan, Ferryden, Buckie, Pittullie, Buckhaven, Cullen, Gardenstown, Port Gordon, Dunbar, St. Combs, Sandend, Findochty, Whitehills, Portknockie, Crovio, Collieston, Fraserburgh, Rosehearty, Burghead, Portsoy, Peterhead, &c. Sketraw, Lybster, Broro, Rockfield, Burnmouth, and Lossiemouth; Commissioners of Fraserburgh; County Councils of Fife, and Clackmannan; and Provost, &c. of Buckie and Dundee.
THE DUKE OF ARGYLLstated, that in that list of Petitions in favour of the measure, just read by the noble Lord, there were only one or two which were 1238 not from small fishing villages, whilst the Petitions against it came from some of the largest towns and Corporations in Scotland.
