HL Deb 05 March 1883 vol 276 c1364
THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY

I beg to ask the noble Earl the Secretary of State for India, Whether he has received any intelligence respecting the meetings which have been held in Madras and Calcutta with reference to the Criminal Procedure Amendment Bill; and also—which is the most important part of my Question—whether it is true that Her Majesty's Government have pledged themselves to carry the Bill through, and whether the Bill has received the formal approval of Her Majesty's Government in England?

THE EARL OF KIMBERLEY

My Lords, I have no official information respecting the meetings in Madras and Calcutta. As to the last part of the Question of the noble Marquess, I may say that he will find in the Papers I propose to lay on the Table to-morrow, and which I hope will be distributed in a few days, that the sanction of the Secretary of State in Council was formally given to the Bill.
