HL Deb 07 June 1883 vol 279 cc1895-6

Order of the Day for the Second Reading read.

THE EARL OF KIMBERLEY

, in moving that the Bill be now read a second time, said, it was the result of an examination into the pay and pensions of the Royal Irish Constabulary and the Dublin Police by two Commissions which had gone over to Ireland and inquired into the subject, its object being to improve the pay and pensions of both these Forces. He was certain the admirable services of the Irish Constabulary and the Dublin Police were so well known to all their Lordships that it was quite unnecessary he should say anything to commend the Bill to the House. No body of men could be more deserving of being treated justly and liberally by Parliament; and he believed the improved conditions as to pay and pensions contained in the Bill would prove satisfactory to the Force. He would conclude by moving the recond reading.

Moved, "That the Bill be now read 2a." —(The Earl of Kimberley.)

Motion agreed to; Bill read 2a accordingly, and committed to a Committee of the Whole House To-morrow.
