§ EARL CADOGANwished to ask the noble Earl the Secretary of State for the Colonies a Question, of which he had given him private Notice—namely, Whether Her Majesty's Government had received an official confirmation of the telegram which appeared in The Times of that morning, stating that the Basuto Chief had agreed to the disarmament of the Tribes, and had offered to surrender his own arms; and, whether an order had been issued directing that all those having arms in their possession should surrender them after a certain extension of time?
THE EARL OF KIMBERLEY, in reply, said, that a confirmation of the telegram in The Times had been received at the Colonial Office. It was in these terms:—
Sir B. Frere to Secretary of State.Received June 21, 1880.19th.—Letsea accepts decision of Her Majesty's Government regarding disarmament as final. Orders all his people to surrender arms; will surrender his own. Asks extension of time for voluntary surrender, which has been granted.
