HL Deb 19 June 1879 vol 247 cc132-3

Order of the Day for the Second Reading, read.

LORD TRURO

said, there were strong objections on the part of many persons to some provisions of the Bill; and if the noble Earl the Chairman of Committees would be good enough to let it stand over till Monday next, some arrangement satisfactory to those interested in the subject might be entered into.

THE BISHOP OF LONDON

was understood to support the request of the noble Lord.

THE EARL OF REDESDALE (CHAIRMAN of COMMITTEES)

asked whether the noble Lord intended to move an Amendment to the Bill? If so, he would not object to the postponement of the second reading.

LORD TRURO

said, he intended to move— That it be an Instruction to the Committee on the Thames River (Prevention of Floods) Bill that they have power to alter the Bill so as to charge to the rates of the Metropolis the costs of all works carried out on public property, and the expense of works of an exceptional character and cost that may be ordered to be executed on private property.

THE EARL OF REDESDALE (CHAIRMAN of COMMITTEES)

said, that being so, he would not oppose the postponement of the second reading.

Second Reading put off to Monday next.
