HL Deb 11 March 1867 vol 185 c1626

In reply to a Question by Lord LYVEDEN,

EARL STANHOPE

said, there was no foundation whatever for the rumour that the Trustees of the British Museum had come to any new decision as to the separation of the Natural History collection from the other collections of the British Museum, The recommendation which they did make was made seven years ago, upon the Motion of Lord Palmerston, who was then an Official Trustee, and was to the effect that it would be desirable to separate from the British Museum the collection of Natural History. But to assert that there had been any altered decision of the Trustees in a contrary sense, or in any sense, was not well founded.
