HL Deb 06 December 1867 vol 190 cc635-6

Order of the Day for the Third Reading read.

LORD LYVEDEN

said, he wished to make an explanation in reference to an observation in the reply of the noble Earl at the head of the Government in the debate on the Abyssinian expedition the previous evening. It appeared that the noble Earl had understood him to have said that he entirely approved the expedition. Now, what he had said was that he entirely approved the manner in which the Government proposed to carry it out; but, as regarded the expedition itself, he thought no opinion ought to be expressed upon it now, as the affair having been actually undertaken, it was much better, for the present, that Parliament should apply itself to the means of insuring success. He had not given, and could not give, any expression of his approbation in respect of the expedition itself.

Bill read 3a, and passed.
