§ THE DUKE OF RICHMONDsaid, that the subject had been under the consideration of the Board of Trade, and during the autumn experiments had been made on various lines of railway throughout the country, with the view of establishing some system of communication between the guard and the driver. These experiments were to be continued till the close of the year, when the results would be laid before the Board of Trade. There were difficulties in the matter, but the Board hoped to overcome them. The Government would endeavour, if possible, to carry out the object to which the recommendations of the Committee of last year were directed, though he did not think the mode of dealing with the matter which had at that time been suggested was the best one.
