HL Deb 28 February 1861 vol 161 c1058

In answer to the Earl of DONOUGHMORE,

Lord HERBERT

said, that officers of militia regiments which had been embodied eighteen months would be admitted to the regular army by the militia examination under the circular of October last until the 30th of June next. Of course it was optional—and many had availed themselves of the option—to go through the other examination, known as the "examination for direct appointments." But if they chose they might undergo the militia examination, and if they were examined before the 30th of June the examination would hold good, though the appointment might be of a later date.
