HL Deb 19 July 1858 vol 151 cc1659-60
THE EARL OF DERBY

said, looking at the state of public business, considering the number of Bills that had just come up from the other House of Parliament, and seeing that the House of Commons had arrived at the important stage when the last Votes had been passed by the Committee of Supply, he hoped it would not be felt he was asking too much in proposing that the House of Lords should meet on the Wednesdays in this and the next week, for about an hour, upon the understanding that they would not take any measure that was likely to raise a serious discussion, but would rather confine their attention to Bills to which there were no objections. If any Bill were brought forward upon which a discussion was likely to arise he would wish it to be understood by the House that such measure should only proceed pro forma, so that the discussion could be taken on its next stage. He hoped that no objection would be raised to this course at the present period of the Session.

EARL GRANVILLE

said, he had no objection to the proposed arrangement upon the understanding mentioned.
