HL Deb 07 April 1843 vol 68 c599
The Duke of Wellington

had promised the noble and learned Lord (Lord Brougham) to make inquiry as to the amount of property tax paid. He had since made inquiry, and had ascertained that the produce received during the past year, was 2,456,288l; that 313,344l.. had been paid in the quarter ending 10th October last, 257,212l. in the quarter ending 5th January, and the remainder in the quarter just concluded. The collection had not been made in many places, the appeals in some cases not yet concluded, and many payments had been made for the whole year, so that it was impossible now to give an estimate of the whole amount the tax would produce.
