HL Deb 14 February 1833 vol 15 c634
Lord Teynham

inquired, whether it was the intention of his Majesty's Ministers to take the management of the turnpike roads into their own hands?

The Duke of Richmond

said, he was not aware that such was the intention of his Majesty's Ministers; but that when the Returns which he moved for last Session should be laid on the Table, he should move for a Special Committee to examine them, as it would be found that the debts on the turnpike roads of England and Wales, amounted to more than 8,000,000l., and that their present expenditure far exceeded their receipts.
