HL Deb 29 January 1817 vol 35 cc37-8

Their lordships met at 2 o'clock for the purpose of carrying up the joint-address of both Houses on the recent attack upon his Royal Highness, and proceeded to Carlton House with the usual formalities. The House met again at 5 o'clock, when the Lord Chancellor informed their lordships, that both Houses had been up with the Address, and that his Royal Highness had been pleased to return the following Answer thereto:

"My lords and gentlemen;

"This additional proof of the strong feelings of duty and loyalty which animate the two Houses of parliament, affords me the highest gratification.

"Relying with the utmost confidence on the steady attachment of his majesty's subjects, I have nothing to regret on this occasion but a flagrant violation of the laws and constitution.

"I shall cause such steps to be immediately taken as may be best calculated to bring to justice and punishment the persons concerned in an offence so dangerous to the public peace, and so injurious to the best interests of the country."
