HC Deb 08 May 1939 vol 347 cc34-7
Mr. Attlee

May I ask the Prime Minister whether it is intended to sit late to-night on the Money Resolution in connection with the Military Training Bill, or whether it would not be possible to take that Resolution at a more opportune hour to-morrow?

The Prime Minister

We are taking the Second Reading of the Military Training Bill to-day, and it is very important that we should get it through as soon as possible. I think, in the circumstances, it will be necessary to take the Money Resolution to-night.

Mr. Attlee

The Prime Minister will realise the undesirability of establishing the practice of making an important Money Resolution on a major Bill a matter to be taken after 11 o'clock at night.

The Prime Minister

I do not dispute what the right hon. Gentleman says, but I think the circumstances are exceptional in this case.

Mr. Attlee

I have no idea of how long this Debate will be prolonged. If it is seen to be running late will it be possible to consider whether it would not be more convenient to take the Money Resolution to-morrow? There is not so very much to-morrow.

The Prime Minister

I am not sure whether the right hon. Gentleman has in mind the extent of the business which we have to-morrow. We are taking the Second Reading of the Reserve Forces Bill and the Committee stage of the Civil Defence Bill.

Motion made, and Question put, That the Proceedings in Committee on Military Training [Money] be exempted, at this day's Sitting, from the provisions of the Standing Order (Sittings of the House)."—[The Prime Minister.]
