§ Mr. ATTLEEMay I ask on what date the House will reassemble after the Christmas Recess, and what business is it proposed to take during the week after reassembly.
§ The PRIME MINISTERIt will be necessary to ask the House to meet on Tuesday, 19th January—a week earlier than was anticipated. We have lost some days, I am sorry to say.
§ Mr. GEORGE GRIFFITHSWe are not to blame.
§ The PRIME MINISTEROn that, I accept the blame.
On Tuesday, 19th January, we propose to take the Committee stage of the 2278 Money Resolutions for Empire Settlement and the Chairmen of Traffic Commissioners (Tenure of Office).
Wednesday, 20th January—Second Reading of the Livestock Industry Bill and Committee stage of the necessary Money Resolution.
Thursday, 21st January—Second Reading of the Beef and Veal Customs Duties Bill and other Orders.
Friday, 22nd January—Private Members' Bills.
On any day, as opportunity offers, other Orders will be taken, including the Unemployment Assistance (Temporary Provisions) Bill.
I propose on Thursday next to move a Motion to take Private Members' time on Wednesday, 20th January, and on Friday, 12th March. These days, together with Friday, 22nd January, fall to Private Members by reason of the earlier date of meeting after the Christmas Recess and the taking of Private Members' time last Friday. As I have already announced, it is not proposed to take Friday, 22nd January, for Government business, but to give precedence- on that day to the Private Members' Bills which were displaced last Friday. The remaining Fridays selected in connection with the ballot for Private Members' Bills will not be affected, nor will the Wednesdays remaining for Private Members' Motions on and after Wednesday, 27th January. To put it briefly, we intend to keep Private Members' time exactly the same as it would have been under the Standing Orders had the Christmas Recess lasted until 26th January, as was originally intended.
§ Mr. THORNECan the right hon. Gentleman say whether the Home Secretary has reported to the Cabinet as to when he is going to introduce the Factories Bill, or must we put down a further question on that subject?
§ The PRIME MINISTERI am afraid I could not answer that question without notice.
§ Mr. ATTLEEHow far is it proposed to go to-night in the event of the Eleven o'clock Rule being suspended?
§ The PRIME MINISTERWe are moving the suspension of the Eleven o'clock Rule in order to obtain the Committee stage of the Ways and Means Resolutions on the Order Paper, but we propose to take certain items of exempted 2279 business—Import Duties Order No. 31 which relates to rubber aprons and the Clearing Office (Turkey) (No. 2) Order.
§ Mr. MATHERSReferring to the business to be taken after the Christmas Recess, may I ask the Prime Minister is he not aware that in bringing Scottish Members back here on the earlier date in January he is running a very grave risk of interfering with the consumption of
§ haggis? Has the right hon. Gentleman never heard of the name of Robert Burns?
§
Motion made, and Question put,
That the Proceedings on Government Business be exempted, at this day's Sitting, from the provisions of the Standing Order (Sittings of the House)."—[The Prime Minister.]
