HC Deb 03 April 1928 vol 215 cc1799-802
Mr. CLYNES

May I ask for what purpose it is intended to suspend the Eleven o'Clock Rule to-night?

The PRIME MINISTER

Yes, to ensure the Second Reading of, and the Financial Resolution on the Agricultural Produce (Grading and Marking) Bill which is the second Order on the Paper, and to take the Report of the

Votes which were passed through Committee last night.

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

Does the Prime Minister intend to make a practice of taking Report of Supply after Eleven o'Clock at night during this Session?

The PRIME MINISTER

It is not an unusual thing.

Lieut. - Commander KENWORTHY

Is the right hon. Gentleman not aware that it is a very objectionable thing from the point of view of the taxpayer?

The PRIME MINISTER

I understand that an arrangement has been made by which these Votes are to be taken before Easter, and there is not much time left. If the hon. and gallant Member was in the House last night, he would know that there are few matters which caused a discussion.

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

Is not the right hon. Gentleman aware that I was in the House last night, and if he will look at the OFFICIAL REPORT he will see that I made two valuable contributions to the Debate.

Motion made, and Question put, That the Proceedings on Government Business be exempted, at this day's Sitting, from the provisions of the Standing Order (Sittings of the House)."—[The Prime Minister.]

The House divided: Ayes, 190; Noes, 117.
