HC Deb 17 December 1925 vol 189 cc1628-32
Mr. MacDONALD

Will the Prime Minister inform us what business the Government propose to take to-night, and why it is proposed to suspend the Eleven o'Clock Rule?

The PRIME MINISTER

We propose to suspend the Eleven o'clock Rule merely as a matter of precaution, because it is necessary that we should get Order No. 2 (Workmen's Compensation Bill [Lords], Third Reading), and Order No. 3 (Consideration of Coastguard Bill [Lords], as amended in the Standing Committee), in addition to the First Order.

Mr. LIVINGSTONE

Can the Prime Minister say when the House will rise?

The PRIME MINISTER

I am afraid I cannot give any definite answer yet. I hope the Prorogation will be not later than Tuesday next. I should not like to say that there is much chance of proroguing on Monday. It must depend particularly upon the consultations between parties this afternoon.

Mr. MACLEAN

We understand that it is intended to introduce a Bill dealing with the amendment of the law relating to the rating of machinery in Scotland. Does the Prime Minister expect to get that Bill passed through all its stages this Session?

The PRIME MINISTER

The object of the introduction of the Bill now is that it may be printed, and that we should have some pleasant reading study for the holidays.

Mr. MACLEAN

Are we to take it that this is the Government's Christmas card to Scottish Members?

Mr. T. WILLIAMS

May I ask if Order No. 2—Workmen's Compensation Bill [Lords]—is subject to any Amendment?

The PRIME MINISTER

No, it is the Third Reading.

Mr. BUCHANAN

Can the right hon. Gentleman give the House any idea, what business will be taken immediately we come back?

The PRIME MINISTER

The first week of a Session is always occupied by the Debate on the Address, when it is possible to raise any question.

Mr. HARDIE

Is there any intention to take Order No. 4—Petroleum Bill [Lords]—before we rise?

The PRIME MINISTER

I understand that Order No. 4 is being opposed, and we can only take it in the event of it being not opposed.

Motion made, and Question put, That the Proceedings on Government Business be exempted at this day's Sitting from the provisions of the Standing Order (Sittings of the House).—[The Prime Minister.]

The House divided: Ayes, 240; Noes, 112.
