HC Deb 26 May 1922 vol 154 cc1608-9

Order for Second Reading read.

Sir R. NEWMAN

I beg to move, "That the Bill be now read a Second time."

I understand there is an arrangement made between His Majesty's Government and another place to deal with this matter by means of a Joint Committee, or something of that sort. That is all I have risen to say.

Mr. CAIRNS

I beg to second the Motion.

Sir J. BAIRD

This Bill covers an extremely difficult series of legal questions, and the Government has taken it into very careful consideration, in conjunction with the promoters of the Bill. A similar Bill has been introduced into another place, and we feel that the only satisfactory way of dealing with so complicated a matter, having possibly far-reaching effects, would be to have it examined by a Committee of both Houses. A message is on its way from another place asking this House to adopt that view. We would recommend that course to the House, and, in view of that, I hope my hon. Friend will withdraw his Motion.

Sir R. NEWMAN

I gladly do so.

Mr. DEPUTY-SPEAKER (Mr. James Hope)

Perhaps the most convenient course would be to move the Adjournment of the Debate.

Motion made, and Question, "That the Debate be now adjourned," put, and agreed to.—[Sir F. Banbury.]

Debate to be resumed upon Monday next.
