HC Deb 25 May 1922 vol 154 cc1408-9
30. Mr. G. TERRELL

asked the Prime Minister whether he is aware that there is great unemployment in the fabric glove and other industries in which the Board of Trade Committees have recommended that Part II of the Safeguarding of Industries Act should be applied: that, owing to his absence abroad, no decision of the Government could be arrived at; and whether, in view of the great urgency and importance of the matter, he is now able to announce the intention of the Government as to making an Order in accordance with the provisions of the Statute?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I hope that it will be possible to announce the policy of the Government before the Whitsuntide Recess.

Mr. TERRELL

Will the right hon. Gentleman give a definite date when the Government can announce their policy, in view of the great urgency and importance of this matter?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

No. I can say no more than I have said, and perhaps I had better not have said as much.

Captain BENN

Can the right hon. Gentleman say when this announcement will he made, and whether, if it be in favour of making Orders, the Orders will he laid before the House before the House disperses for Whitsuntide?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I cannot add anything to the answer.

Captain BENN

Not, even, when?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

No. I said I hoped a statement would be made before Whitsuntide.
