§ 84. Mr. G. BARNESasked the Minister of Agriculture the total acreage of land under cultivation as allotments each year or for the past five years?
Sir A. BOSCAWENNo returns of the area of land under cultivation as allotments were obtained for the year 1917 owing to pressure of War work, nor were any returns obtained last year for reasons of economy. From returns obtained in 1918, 1919 and 1920, which were not in all cases complete returns, the Ministry estimates that the total acreage of land cultivated as allotments in England and Wales at the dates of the returns was approximately as follows:—
These figures may be compared with an estimated area of 130,000 acres under allotments before the War.
Year. Acreage. 1918 195,000 1919 180,000 1920 185,000
