§ 47. Mr. BETTERT0Nasked the Minister of Transport whether he is aware of the excessive railway rates to which home-grown timber is now subject; 1788 and whether, in view of the fact that the high rates for round timber make it practically impossible for merchants to make purchases of home-grown timber at a distance from their mills, he will make such representation to the railway companies, or take such other appropriate action, as will ensure a substantial reduction of these rates?
§ Mr. NEALThe hon. and learned Member is aware that the percentage increases in rates were applied on the recommendation of the Rates Advisory Committee, and that the Minister has now no direct jurisdiction over railway rates. It is within the discretion of the railway companies to reduce their charges as they deem expedient, and, under Sections 60 and 78 of the Railways Act, 1921, it is also open to any trader or representative body of traders to apply to the Rates Tribunal to reduce the charges. I am sending a copy of the hon. and learned Member's request to the railway companies for their consideration.
