HC Deb 04 May 1922 vol 153 cc1551-2
47. Mr. G. MURRAY

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what progress has been made in connection with making provision for an efficient telegraph service from Great Britain to, and between, the various British West Indian Colonies upon the termination of the present agreement with the West Indian and Panama Telegraph Company?

Mr. WOOD

Negotiations are still in progress for the construction of a new cable from Bermuda to Barbados and beyond, but I am not in a position to make any statement on the subject at present.

Mr. MURRAY

Has the question of wireless telephony and wireless been taken into consideration in connection with this matter?

Mr. WOOD

Yes, Sir. When I was in the West Indies my attention was drawn constantly to these matters and I have ventured to express an opinion on them in my report, which I hope will shortly come before the House.

Sir J. NORTON-GRIFFITHS

Does that relate to wireless?

Mr. WOOD

Yes.

Mr. HURD

Is the hon. Gentleman aware of the emphatic declarations made by the Secretary of State for the Colonies on this subject in June of last year, when the right hon. Gentleman pointed out the immediate urgency of the question?

Mr. WOOD

Yes, I have that in my mind.
