HC Deb 04 May 1922 vol 153 c1541
20. Mr. SWAN

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he is aware that the Egyptian Ministry has circulated to the various Government Departments a secret order instructing them to observe, in making appointments to Government posts, the proportion of one Copt to every 12 Mahommedans appointed in accordance with the latest proposals to Egypt by His Majesty's Government regarding the protection of the minorities in Egypt; and whether this policy i6 directed as a reprisal against the Copts for joining the Mahommedans in the national movement?

Earl WINTERTON

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. The second part does not, therefore, arise.

Mr. SWAN

Is not this likely to make the Treaty more difficult to work?

Mr. SPEAKER

The answer given was in the negative. Therefore, that does not arise.
