HC Deb 02 May 1922 vol 153 c1135
3. Sir THOMAS BENNETT

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India if a Retrenchment Committee, as agreed to between the Government of India and the Legislative Assembly, has been constituted; if not, will he state the reason for delay; and whether the terms of the reference have been drawn up?

Earl WINTERTON

Steps are being-taken to establish the Committee as rapidly as possible, but neither its constitution nor its terms of reference have yet been finally settled. My hon. Friend will appreciate the importance of securing the services of the best available personnel, and the fact that this may necessitate a little delay in completing the formation of the Committee.

Sir C. YATE

Will the Noble Lord take steps to see that the superfluous officers brought in on account of the Reform scheme are now retrenched?

Earl WINTERTON

The matter will be considered by the Committee which, I have stated, is being set up.
