HC Deb 02 May 1922 vol 153 cc1160-1
39. Mr. GILBERT

asked the Postmaster-General in how many post offices in London it is possible to send telegrams during all hours of the night; whether any night offices have recently been closed in London; what is the latest hour one can send telegrams from the head and sub-district post offices in the London district; whether these hours have recently been curtailed; and, if so, for what reason?

Mr. KELLAWAY

The number of telegraph offices in London (including railway stations) open throughout the night is seven. The latest hour at which telegrams can be handed in at head offices and the principal branch offices in London is normally 8 p.m. There has been no recent curtailment of these hours. Telephone subscribers in London can dictate telegrams at any time to the Central Telegraph Office for onward transmission, and non-subscribers can also do so from call offices at telephone exchanges which are open always (i.e., the majority of telephone exchanges in London) upon payment of the usual call office fee in addition to the charge for the telegram.
