HC Deb 13 March 1922 vol 151 cc1737-8
4. Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

asked the President of the Board of Trade the prices of malt, hops, and barley in March, 1919, 1920, 1921, and in March of this year, respectively?

Mr. BALDWIN

As the answer to this question involves a statistical table, I will, with the permission of the House, have it circulated in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

The following is the statement promised:

In view of the wide range of market quotations, and the numerous varieties quoted, the course of prices is not readily indicated from such quotations. The average values per cwt. of malt of British manufacture, registered as exported in the month of March, were 40s. 4d. in 1919, 47s. 6d. in 1920, and 42s. 1d. in 1921. For February, 1922, the average value was 28s. 2d. per cwt.

The average official prices of hops to the grower were as follows:

Per cwt.
£ s.
Season 1918–19 16 10
Season 1919–20 18 5
Season 1920–21 17 10
Season 1921–22 18 0

I am unable to furnish average prices of brewing barley for the dates specified. The "Gazette" average prices of British barley, per 400 lbs., in the first week of March were 62s. 7d. in 1919, 97s. 4d. in 1920, 52s. 5d. in 1921, and 41s. 3d. in 1922
