HC Deb 09 March 1922 vol 151 c1486
74. Captain BENN

asked the Home Secretary whether, by abolishing the mounted branch of the Metropolitan Police, a saving could be effected approximately equal to the cost of the women patrols?

Mr. SHORTT

No, Sir; they would have to be replaced by foot police in much larger number.

Captain BENN

But are not mounted police much more expensive than foot police, and if foot police replaced mounted police, could not the economy desired be effected?

Mr. SHORTT

No. The foot police required would be a very much greater number.
