§ Sir R. HORNEA very rough calculation shows the amount in question to be approximately £32,000,000. It would not be possible to give exact figures under the various heads without a disproportionate amount of labour and expense. I ought, however, to point out that compensation was not paid in respect of trenches dug in forward areas in France.
