HC Deb 01 March 1922 vol 151 c379
58. Sir W. DAVISON

asked the Prime Minister whether the British Government have informed the Provisional Government for Southern Ireland that the British Government held itself responsible for the burning of Cork, and would provide the necessary money for its rebuilding up to £2,000,000?

Mr. CHURCHILL

The arrangements made between the two Governments for the payment of compensation in respect of malicious damage to property in Ireland were fully explained in the Debate on the Supplementary Estimates on the 24th February. No such statement or undertaking as that suggested by the hon. Member has ever been made.

Sir W. DAVISON

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that Mr. Michael Collins, in replying to a deputation from Cork, definitely stated that the British Government have agreed to be responsible up to £2,000,000 sterling for the burning of Cork, and is that statement correct?

Mr. CHURCHILL

No, Sir. I think it is quite incorrect both in regard to the assessment and in the assigning of responsibility?

Lieut.-Commander KENW0RTHY

Is the Government going to publish the Report of General Strickland on this burning, and if not, why not?

Mr. SPEAKER

That question does not arise.
