HC Deb 01 March 1922 vol 151 c352
9. Mr. W. THORNE

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty how many ex-service men employed in a temporary capacity competed at the recent examinations for the clerical class; how many passed, qualified, and failed, respectively; what number of those who failed applied to appear before the Investigating Board under paragraphs 36–39 of the Lytton Committee's Third Interim Report; and how many were recommended?

Mr. AMERY

151 temporary ex-service men serving in the Admiralty who failed at the November-December examinations, 1920, were recommended by their immediate superiors as specially competent to carry out the whole of the duties likely to be required of members of the clerical class. Of these, 37 were regarded by the Board of Admiralty as fulfilling all the conditions of paragraphs 36–39 of the Third Interim Report of the Lytton Committee, and were accordingly recommended to the Investigating Board. I regret that the other figures asked for by the hon. Member are not immediately available and their compilation would involve an unjustifiable expenditure of time and labour.
