HC Deb 14 February 1922 vol 150 c817
56. Mr. RAPER

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the total number of people in Great Britain and Ireland who paid Income Tax in 1921?

Mr. YOUNG

The estimated number of individuals in Great Britain and Ireland with incomes above the effective exemption limit for the year 1921–22 is as follows:

Number actually paying tax 2,400,000
Number whose incomes are covered by the personal allowance and deductions and reliefs 2,600,000
Total 5,000,000
Mr. L. MALONE

Is it not a fact that of this number 600 of them are millionaires, and could not the attention of the Geddes axe be called to this fact?
