HC Deb 14 February 1922 vol 150 cc794-5
20. Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what is the present situation in Iraq; whether there has been any renewed disorder; whether any constituent assembly has been called together, or what preparations have been made for calling one; and what progress has been made in the reduction of the British and Indian forces in that area during the last three months?

Mr. CHURCHILL

I propose to make a full statement on this subject when I present the Middle East Estimates.

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

In view of the fact that we may have an election before then, can we have no know- ledge of when the Middle East estimates are to be presented? Cannot the right hon. Gentleman give information now as to the position in Iraq, especially as our money is being poured out for that mandate?

Mr. CHURCHILL

I am looking forward very much to the opportunity of making a statement on the subject.

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

In the meantime, cannot we be told anything? Is there peace in Iraq, or is there any further disturbance?

Mr. SPEAKER

The hon. and gallant Gentleman should put down a more specific question on that point.
