HC Deb 09 February 1922 vol 150 c311
Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I beg to move, That during the present Session the House do meet on Fridays at Eleven o'clock, and that Four o'clock and half-past Four o'clock be substituted for Five o'clock and half-past Five o'clock, respectively, as the hours for the interruption of Business and Adjournment of the House on that day. This is a Motion to enable the House to sit at Eleven o'clock on Friday and to rise at Four or half-past Four, instead of Five or half-past Five. I have made, or caused to be made, widespread inquiry in all quarters of the House, and I believe that in making this Motion I express, though not the unanimous, the almost unanimous opinion of the House.

Sir D. MACLEAN

May I suggest to my right hon. Friend that he should consider the advisability of making the necessary alterations in the Standing Orders to make this, as I think, general improvement a permanent part of the Standing Orders of the House?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I should be very glad to do that as soon as it is clear that the House definitely wishes to change the hour, but after only a short experience I thought it better, this Session, to keep it still in the stage in which, without difficulty, we can revert to the old practice if we wish to do so.

Question put, and agreed to.

Resolved, That during the present Session the House do meet on Fridays at Eleven o'clock, and that Four o'clock and half-past Four o'clock be substituted for Five o'clock and half-past Five o'clock, respectively, as the hours for the interruption of Business and Adjournment of the House on that day.
